Important Notes on Zip Blinds

If you have not used Zip Blinds before, there are a couple of pointers to take note. Please click on them to learn more.

Zip Blinds use perforated sunscreen mesh fabrics to filter out the strong sun glare and heat.

These fabrics have tiny holes and allow you to enjoy outside scenery view during daytime, while providing you with privacy as people standing outside cannot see in.

The opposite happens as night falls, you will not be able to view outside and if your ceiling light is turned on, someone standing outside can view inwards.

In summary, the “dark side” will be able to view the “bright side”.

Zip Blinds fabrics are perforated with very tiny holes (1% perforation). They can still block normal rain splashes well. But when strong wind blows the rain towards the blind, a bit of rain water will still seep through the tiny holes. Please be mindful that the Zip Blind system is not a 100% watertight solution.

The Zip Blind has a typical max width of 5m. However that max width is only doable for ground units. For condos and etc, a more practical width is around 2.7-2.8m so as to be able to go into the lift. Sometimes, if the balcony width is about 3.5m, you might be able do one wide piece but we will need to climb stairs with additional labour cost. Anything wider than that, you’ll have to split the blinds into 2 sets.
For condos with a MA, the colours would have already been determined by the management. Do check with them on the approved colour codes. They would have a sample in their office. We should be able to match 90% of the fabric colours in the market. For the frame colours, no problem at all as we offer free powder coating for now.

A normal 3-pin socket power point is required. Cable casing will be laid to the nearest point. If there is no existing power socket in the balcony, you will need to hire your own certified electrician to fix it up.

As the fabric is an outdoor mesh by nature, it will naturally have minor imperfections due to its flexible weave material. Crease lines & minor “distortions” in the mesh are to be expected, especially in areas near the side tracks. This is especially true as the blind has been rolled up during storage & transport.

Leave the blind down for a few days, over time & under sunlight, some creases/distortions may disappear while others remain. This is not a cause for concern and is considered standard.

One should NOT expect the zip blind to have a solid smooth surface as the fabric will expand & contract when subject to rain, sun & wind over time.

FAQ for SHYZIP Blinds

S.H.Y. are the initials from the founder’s name, Seizo HaYashicughi. Combining it with “Zip” from Zip Blinds, we get SHYZIP ®.

(Sometimes, people also refer to them as SHY ZIP.)

SHYZIP ® was first invented in 1985 and has been around for more than 38 years. It has been installed in many different parts around the world!

The core parts of the SHYZIP® system are the pelmet cassette, the side tracks and the SHY® Zip fastener system. These are imported from Japan by a local sole distributor in Singapore.

We complement the rest of the blind system by using USA Phifer fabric and China Dooya motor.

Zip Blind is the general category name for such blinds. (Other common names include Zip Track Blinds, Zip Track, Track-Guided Blinds, Windproof Blinds and etc.)

Ziptrak (without the ‘c’) is a brand that hails from Australia, alongside with Zipscreen.

There are many other brands from different vendors, just like DirectZip™ is our own in-house brand, and SHYZIP® is from Japan.

All above mentioned brands fall under the general “Zip Blinds” category for such outdoor blinds.

Take a $1.5M condo for example. Assume the balcony is 2.5m length by 1.5m width, which works out to be 40 sq ft floor area for the balcony.

If the whole condo floor area was 1000 sq ft, that balcony space would have cost about $60k, which is a pretty expensive outdoor space. If your balcony is larger in space, it will had cost even more!

Blind quick measure guide

First, follow the orange lines to measure the window width and height.

Next, as a rule of thumb, add a 0.10m-0.15m (10-15cm) allowance to each side of the measurement. This will allow the blind to overlap the window and reduce light leakage from the sides.

For Illustration: Blind Width = Window Width + 0.10m + 0.10m

Blind Height (with beam) = Window Height + 0.10m

Blind Height (w/o beam) = Window Height + 0.10m + 0.10m 

In the above example, there is a beam right above the window. As the blind’s headrail will be mounted on the beam directly, there is no need to add 10cm to the top.

If there is no beam, the blinds will be mounted 10cm upwards from the top of the window frame.

Notes:  1 . The 10-15 cm (4-6 inches) allowance is a general guide, it can be more or less depending on individual’s preference. The more overlap you have, the lesser will be the ambient light leakage.

2. All blinds measurements are inclusive of the headrail & bottom bar. For roller/combi blinds, please note that the fabric width will be approximately 1.25~1.5 inches (3.2~3.8 cm) narrower than the headrail.

For curtain width, generally it will be from wall-to-wall. You can easily estimate the width from the floorplan.
 
For HDB beam-to-floor, the height is usually 2.1m to 2.23m approximately.
 
For HDB ceiling-to-floor, the height is usually 2.4m to 2.7m approximately.
 
For Illustration:
Curtain Width = Wall-to-Wall Width
 
Curtain Height (beam) = Beam to Floor Height
 
Curtain Height (ceiling) = Ceiling to Floor Height 
 
Notes:
1. As long as the required height is not more than 2.60-2.85m, it won’t affect the price. Generally, without joining fabrics, 100% blackout curtains can support till 2.45-2.65m height, and Dim-out curtains can support till 2.85m height. (This also depends on the type of fabrics.)
 
2. We only work with curtain tracks or rails. We do not carry curtains rods/poles regrettably.
 
P.S.
For curtain, normally it will be done from beam-to-floor to save some floor space.
 

Delivery + Installation Fee & Notes

1) Delivery plus installation starts at min. $80 for up to 5 indoor items. Additional indoor items are at $10 each. (For mainland Singapore only.)
 
2) Outdoor Roller Blinds start at $50 per item. Zip Blinds are at $80 per set.
 
3) Other items such as motors, exceptional tall ceilings & etc will require a custom estimate.
 
4) Delivery only (without installation), Self-collection and/or DIY installation can be arranged as desired to save on costs.
 
5) If the unit is not at lift level, stair-climbing charges are applicable. This is the same for within a Landed property, HDB Executive Maisonette, Condo Penthouse & similar.
 

Site Survey Fee & Notes

1) A nominal on-site consultation fee of $50 is payable upfront ($70 for Semi-D or similar). It will be used as a CREDIT towards purchases of more than $480. (In the event of non-purchase, this fee is non-refundable due to time & labour spent.)
 
(If the site is not ready or if there is a change of mind after the first site visit, subsequent site surveys will be chargeable and are not reimbursable.)
 
2) The best time to do a site survey is after installation of the window grilles, carpentry around window, flooring, aircon & trunking, electrical casing and curtain pelmet are completed, as all these will affect the measurements. If the painting is also done, it is also easier to match the colours to your room walls.
 
3) During the site survey, we will bring along the popular fabrics samples. If you wish to view a wider range of fabrics, you can make an appointment to visit our showroom in Woodlands.
 
4) For DIY measure, the site survey fee is not required. Do note that you have to be confident of your measurements, as alteration fees for “big to small” are applicable. “Small to big” alterations are impossible. Additional transport charges are required for re-delivery. We can also guide you to measure if desired.
 
5) In any case, we can give you a free estimate over your floorplan or measurements first, so you can decide if we are a good fit before committing to a site survey. :)
